Why choose pine timber for your WA building project?

Posted on August 18, 2015

Pine timber is one of the most stable and durable timbers you can choose for a building project. Pine timber is also one of the most cost-effective timbers you can choose when compared with other soft woods.

So what do we mean when we refer to a wood as being “soft”? A wood is classified as either a hardwood or softwood, and the two are distinguished by the manner in which they reproduce as opposed to their end use or how they appear.

A hardwood is one that comes from a flowering plant known as an angiosperm. Good examples of hardwood include oak, walnut and maple trees. In comparison, softwood generally comes from evergreen conifers such as a pine. These are known as gymnosperm trees and they usually have needles and cones.

Softwood has a faster growth-rate than hardwood and as a result is not as dense. However you can still rely on softwoods such as pine in construction products, as it has the strength to support a frame construction and yet it is still malleable and extremely easy to work with.

The durability of pine timber is also well-known. Due to its open grain structure, pine readily accepts treatments that prevent deterioration of the timber and act as preservatives at the highest level available in the construction industry. Preservatives add substantially to the lifespan of pine timber.   Pine is also extremely resistant against wear, making it a perfect choice for areas such as decks and flooring where you will naturally have a great deal of foot traffic.
